When to Ask for Contact Information on Social Media

This week on Social Brand Chat presented by KXIC we discussed a question from John LaBella. In launching an online campaign designed to drive users to download a book, John asked about when and how to collect contact information. Let’s chat about this great question!

John’s question is one that marketers consistently grapple with. Getting someone to convert once is only half the battle. You need to ensure that you’re also building up your permission data base — your real long-term asset. This isn’t always easy. Some are looking to drive downloads and help their ideas spread further in a shorter period of time. With this objective, you probably wouldn’t want to gate your content (require contact info before downloading). On the other hand, if you’re looking past the short-term gains and are focusing on building your list, you’d want your users to submit a lead form first. We dig a little deeper on the full podcast episode.

For this week’s social media news, we discussed the exciting milestone reached this past week by everyone’s favorite blogging platform WordPress, which is 11 years old. Here’s a thoughtful blog post on what WordPress means and why so many of us value it by the always insightful Joe Manna.
