“Everyone has a brand because everyone has a reputation.” John Michael Morgan knows a thing or two about branding for everyone. That’s because the Brand Against the Machine author has worked with everyone from bestselling authors, Fortune 500 companies, small business owners, entrepreneurs, celebrities, and churches to build better brands. I couldn’t wait to chat about what all of these different types of brands have in common on this week’s On Brand podcast.

Episode Highlights

“Everything we do is branding.” This is one of John’s greatest hits. And it’s a task that can sound daunting. So how can you start to unpack the challenges that come with this? “Most of us are too close to our business. Take a step back, walk into your store, call, buy something. Then think — was any of this worth talking about?”

“We often think that what we sell is the product. We’re actually selling the in between.” It’s all about experience. “We’ve got to stop making it so hard to do business with us.” If we don’t, we leave the door open for disruption. Remember how quickly Netflix changed how we rented movies?

“Get caught up in the people you serve, not the services you sell.” Then your priority becomes your customers and service. Not ‘how’ you go about doing it.

What about the connection between branding and leadership? John has expanded his own consulting work to include leadership to help high achievers. Are there similarities between branding and leadership? “Your reputation is your brand and leadership is taking responsibility for that.”

What brand has made John smile recently? Battle Box! (Sort of like StichFix or Bark Box for survival gear). We know whose house we’re going to when the zombie apocalypse comes!
