The ability to engage your audience, interact with your clients (and your peers) and even generate leads in less than 140 characters is practically an art form. It may seem like an impossible task, but there are plenty of top brands who are more than up to the task and as a result they have become Twitter power houses.

A new infographic from Who Is Hosting This titled Which Brands Rule Twitter? (below) reveals what it is that makes these particular brands some of the most successful on Twitter at the moment.

One of the key uses of Twitter is to give customers a chance to interact with your brand in real time. Unfortunately, this will often result in it being used to highlight complaints and problems. However, if handled appropriately it is possible to manipulate what was once a negative into a positive depending on how you handle the complaint. Statistics show that most brands will respond to around 42% of customer inquiries (both good and bad) that are made via Twitter. However, Ford has made themselves stand out as a leader in Customer Service by ensuring that they respond to at least 75% of Twitter messages. Similarly, while the average response takes just over 5 hours, Microsoft is currently averaging just 42 minutes.

These displays of above average customer service are what is putting both Ford and Microsoft ahead of their rivals on Twitter. However, if there was an award for customer service via Twitter then it would have to go to JetBlue. Not only do they boast the largest number of followers of all airlines, but they respond to 79% of Twitter inquiries and have an average response time of only 13 minutes!

Of course, making the best use of Twitter is not all about customer service. It is also a great platform for generating leads and making sales. You may be surprised to learn that customers are more likely to make a purchase if they follow the brand on Twitter. One great example of using Twitter to boost sales comes from online fashion store Asos. Their recent Twitter campaign utilizing the hashtag #BestNightEver is estimated to have netted them almost $8 million of sales.

These are just some of the key successes enjoyed by the brands that are dominating Twitter. Check out the infographic for additional information. Could your brand be doing better on this 140 character platform?
