This week on Social Brand Chat presented by KXIC we discussed a question from Xianduan Shi who asked, “Social media vs digital marketing — What’s the difference?” Believe it or not, this is a question many find themselves asking. Let’s chat about this.

Social media. Digital marketing. Tomato. To-MAH-to. We cavalierly toss around these labels in today’s rapidly changing media environment but we don’t often stop and ask what the difference is. Instead we treat them interchangeably, which isn’t always appropriate. On this week’s podcast we looked at the difference and the hierarchy implied when you say social media vs digital marketing. We also talked about how this impacts where marketing is going over time.

For this week’s social media news we discussed an interesting shift in personnel as Apple hired Nike’s head of social media. What does this talent movement mean? We took a few guesses during the show.
